I don't have a lot to say except everything is just growing like crazy, with
the sunny days and daylight savings that we are all now benefiting from.
So get as much into your garden now as you can for summer, all I can say is
at this time of year I wish my garden was bigger!
The last of beetroot are large, but now starting to go to seed so time to
lift the last of the beetroot, yay, more room for other summer seedlings.
Get Celery seeds in now, I found last year a dozen did me all summer and
into early autumn, as you just break off what you need, and freeze any
excess, but the trick is to keep them well watered, so they remain juicy to
eat.
Get seeds for cucumber into the garden now, and try all sorts from apple,
telegraph, short green to Lebanese cucumbers, you can never have too much
cucumber over summer.
Get seedlings in now for tomatoes and lettuces, they will double in size
very quickly, make sure you put stakes next to your tomatoes for them they
grow rapidly to give them support, even the dwarf tomatoes need staking I
found last year. Best to put the stakes in now while they're infants
rather than stabbing them in the foot later with stakes.
My onion seeds are now starting to show bulbs at the surface, so I'm really
pleased with their progress. Silver beet and spinach will love you if you
plant them now and reward you by doubling in size very quickly.
Lastly I'm so pleased cutting off all the first flowers for my strawberries
in October in the hope of a more bountiful crop, is showing good signs at
the moment with all my strawberries now profusely flowering - fingers
crossed I guess.
Most warm weather vegetables can now be planted.
- Make generous use of compost.
- Plant herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers, capsicums, eggplant, lettuce,
sweetcorn, gherkins, spinach, spring onions, watermelon, rockmelon,
beetroot, celery and cabbage.
- Plant basil with tomatoes to improve flavour.
- Sow seeds directly into the garden; beans, peas, pumpkin,
courgettes, carrots, beetroot, parsnip, radish and sweetcorn;
- Sow in trays for transplanting later: lettuce, cabbage,
capsicum, eggplant, leeks, spring onions.
- For continuous harvesting make sowings at three weekly
intervals, eg lettuce, beans and sweetcorn.
- Spray with Champ or Greenguard to guard against fungus diseases.
- Plant main crop potatoes.
- All vegetables will benefit from a side dressing of Blood & Bone
or General Garden Fertiliser.
- Tomatoes are growing quickly and need lots of water and feeding.
Try Tomato Food. Regular deep watering is best.
- Feed all citrus trees with Citrus Fertiliser.
- Dust cabbages and cauliflowers with Derris Dust to prevent white
butterfly caterpillar.
- Plant herbs and vegetables in pots.
- Increase watering as weather warms up.
- Re-pot orchids after flowering
- Plant hanging baskets and terracotta pots with flowers for
summer.
- Use Water Storage Crystals mixed in to potting mix to retain
moisture.
- Seal terracotta pots to aid moisture retention.
- Water daily to prevent drying out.
- Feed with Phostrogen weekly.
