Growing
Tomatoes do not like frosts, they can be planted early spring (September)
when
the weather has
begun to warm up and they aren't likely to be very successful
if planted
later than November.
Place a stake next to your plants at planting time, as doing this later may
cause damage to the
roots. Stakes should be about 2m high. Stake even the
dwarf varieties!
They need a warm, well drained planting site with full sun for most of the
day,
and sheltered from
the wind
The soil needs to be rich and well drained.
Tomatoes can also be planted in a
container.
Lateral shoots form between the junction of a leaf and the stem. These
should
be removed
as they detract from the fruit.
Companion planting with basil is also a great idea, both in the garden and
the
kitchen.
Don't plant in the same place year after year as diseases build up in the
soil.
Make sure air can circulate around the plants.
Remove any infected leaves
Don't water the leaves.
Water your plants regularly
Tomatoes are one of the easiest crops to sow from seed and results are quick.
When growing plants inside don't pour water on the leaves as this encourages
mildew.

Harvesting
Harvest as soon as you see colour.
Place fruit inside in a warm place out of the direct sunlight to ripen
slowly, allowing
full
development of the
sugars for the better taste.
As the fruit ripens on the vine, trim off the bottom leaves to improve air
circulation
thus
preventing disease.
NEVER WATER THE LEAVES ON YOUR PLANT DURING THE HEAT OF THE DAY.
Storing
Never store in the fridge as this diminishes
sugar and reduces flavour.
Tomatoes can be rinsed and frozen whole. At a later date I will thaw
the tomatoes and add to a spaghetti bolognaise or a
nacho dish, or
casseroles or even create a tomato sauce or relish recipe when I have time.
